Brand extension is the addition of a new product to an already established line of products under the same brand name. Brand extension allows the new product the benefit of the older product’s established reputation. For example, three members of the Boston Red Sox, Manny Ramirez, Curt Schilling and Tim Wakefield, each agreed to launch their own wine label with proceeds benefiting their charity of choice. VinLozano Imports has created for Manny Ramirez – “Manny Being Merlot” for Curt Schilling – “Schilling Schardonnay” and for Tim Wakefield – “CaberKnuckle.”

But I think there are loads of possibilities that players have not yet considered for their own brand extensions and I’m proud to share some of these marketing ideas today in the hope we can create some synergy.

* Sammy S*sa – Sammy Soda, the enhanced cola drink
* David Ortiz – Big Poppies for really big bagels
* Brett Myers – Myers Rum, great with Sammy Soda, to ease that arm pain
* Curtis Granderson – Curtis Grandersunscreen, don’t get burnt in the outfield
