Ray Flynn is a former U.S. Ambassador to the Vatican and Mayor of Boston.
In a recent speech, he told this story:
In January of 1999, I was standing next to one of baseball’s greatest players, Stan Musial of the St. Louis Cardinals and waiting the arrival of Pope John Paul II to Lambert Airport.
When the Pope arrived, he greeted me warmly. But when his eye caught Stan Musial next to me, he excitedly turned to his top Vatican official walking next to him, Cardinal Secretary of State Angelo Sodano and said to him, “Ah! now this is a real Cardinal.”
Traveling all the way from Mexico, getting off the plane and immediately recognizing Stan “The Man” Musial and making that funny comment was something I will never forget.
