LACK OF QUALITY STARTS IS A CRITICALLY IMPORTANT STAT

Definition of “Lack of Quality Starts” (LOQ)

Many stats that have been introduced in recent years are more sophisticated than many average fans can handle. I have created a simple stat developed by my simple mind.

Lack of Quality Starts – A starting pitcher who allows five or more runs (earned or unearned) in 11 innings or less (5 ER in 11 IP = 4.09 ERA). This stat includes either earned and unearned runs because unless the five runs were scored solely as a result of errors, the pitcher is still complicit in that large number of runs scoring.

Lack of Quality Starts for May 8 and May 9, 2017

If the simple LOQ definition doesn’t strike you as anything worthy of paying attention to, indulge me by looking at the number of starters who threw these over the last couple of days.

Arrieta is a good example of why unearned runs are tracked here as well
