WOMEN’S WORK by BILL ARNOLD

Minor League Baseball, on Tuesday, hired Emma Charlesworth-Seiler to work as an umpire in the Single-A Gulf Coast League this season. She is just the eighth woman tapped to officiate games in the affiliated Major/Minor League system. Charlesworth-Seiler was the only woman in her class of 100 at the Minor League Baseball Umpire Training Academy this past year. Her new assignment starts on June 26 when the GCL begins play. The seven other women who have umpired in the system are Bernice Gera (1972), Christine Wren (1975-77), Pam Postema (1977-89), Theresa Cox Fairlady (1989-91), Ria Cortesio (1999-2007), Shanna Kook (2003-04) and Jen Pawol (2016-present).
