Nine Stats to Know, June 13, from Billy-Ball

  1. Joe Mauer has just two homers this season and since September 1 of last season, he’s hit a total of four.
  2. As a reliever last season, batters hit .217 against Phil Hughes. As a starter this season, they are hitting .218.
  3. Judge pitchers by the company they keep: Ricky Nolasco (16), Zack Greinke (15), Tim Lincecum (15), Roy Halladay (14), Max Scherzer (14), and Stephen Strasburg (14), are the pitchers with at least 14 strikeouts in a game since the start of last season.
  4. Junior Griffey will be the first overall number one baseball draft pick to make it to the Hall of Fame. Reggie Jackson was drafted at number two by the A’s after the Mets chose Steve Chilcott.
  5. Chris Carpenter is now 24-5 with a 2.34 ERA since the start of last season and unless Ubaldo Jimenez collapses he will be without a Cy Young for a second year.
  6. Best free agent signing this past off-season? Vladimir Guerrero, who now has 54 RBI for Texas this season which is four more than had all last year for the Angels and is hitting .338, which is his highest since he hit .345 for the Montréal Expos in 2000.
  7. In 78 plate appearances against Mariano Rivera this season, he has struck out 18 batters and allowed 16 total bases.
  8. Over the last three seasons Dustin Pedroia has averaged 24 infield hits, this season he only has two which shows how much that knee is really bothering him.
  9. Daniel Nava who hit a grand slam in the first pitch he saw in the majors, was called up to the Red Sox to replace Josh Reddick, who had been called up to replace Jeremy Hermida on the DL with rib fractures. Hermida also hit a grand slam in his first at bat, when he pinch-hit for the Marlins in 2005.
