Padres walkoff to victory

The most interesting part of this game between two uninteresting teams is not that the Padres defeated the Marlins, 5-4. It’s not that Heath Bell blew the save by allowing a homer to former Padre Mike Cameron with two outs in the 9th and then went on to pick up the vulture win.

It’s not even the fact that the Padres retired Trevor Hoffman‘s number. Hoff is baseball’s all-time saves leader with 601, he had 552 saves wearing a San Diego uni. The most interesting thing isn’t even the fact that the Padres swept the seven-game season series from the Fish.

To me the most interesting thing was that the rally began when Nick Hundley tripled. It  was the fourth triple in the last six games for Hundley, the Padres’ catcher who now has five three-baggers on the season. There are only 37 big leaguers who have at least five triples this season and Hundley is the only catcher.

Throughout baseball history only 340 catchers have had five or more triples in a season. Here are the catchers with 10+ in a season:
