As I watched the 9th inning yesterday, Jose Valverde‘s streak of 36 straight saves looked like it was about to come to an end. Detroit was winning 8-7 with one down in the 9th but Cleveland had runners on second and third. As pinch-hitter Matt LaPorta lined the ball to shallow centerfield, I watched Kosuke Fukudome tag at third as Austin Jackson threw the ball to the plate. Despite the throw being slightly off line, it was home early enough so that Alex Avila could slap the tag on Fukudome and Detroit won the game and the play ended Detroit’s weekend sweep of the Indians in the most-attended three-game series in Comerica Park’s 12-season history (132,239 fans).
Ubaldo Jimenez looked awful for the Indians allowing eight runs in 3.1 innings.
So? What do you think? Has the bell tolled on Cleveland’s Cinderella season?
