Since Baltimore had the night off yesterday, their extra-inning games streak is alive. The record was set by the 1908 Detroit Tigers who played five in a row (September 9-13). And while 11 extra-inning games out of 60 played is a lot, they have a ways to go before they threaten the major league record of 31 extra-inning tilts played by the 1943 Boston Red Sox in a 154-game schedule, although they are just about on pace.

I don’t believe there is much rhyme or reason to the frequency or the results of extra-inning games. Why have the Orioles played 11 and the Diamondbacks just one? Why is Oakland 4-2 and Cleveland 2-4?

Here’s a look at all the teams records:

By the way, the record for extra-inning games in a season is 210 which has been done four times, but the Orioles have already set a season record for extra-inning wins.

“We’d rather win games in nine, but if you’re going to go extras you want to win those,” Orioles catcher Matt Wieters said after his walkoff double on Sunday. “The key is our bullpen has been able to keep teams where they’re at — especially when we get to extra innings — and just give our offense the chance to get a timely hit.” Weiter’s point is well taken, the Orioles bullpen threw four scoreless on Sunday lowering its AL-best ERA to 2.37. The O’s have outscored their opponents 19-3 overall in the 11 extra inning games this year, and have outscored the opposition 19-0 in the nine extra-inning wins.
