The last time the Red Sox and the Yankees met on Opening Day

I hate it when the Red Sox and the Yankees meet on Opening Day. Rivalry games should never get drowned out in the hoopla and hoo-hah of a day revered by amateur fans who too frequently will forget about baseball for months after the opener.

yankee-stadium-1923-opening-dayThis year the Yankee/Red Sox pairing has much less significance. As opposed to an ALCS preview, this is more along the lines of an S & N Series, representing the chances of these two teams both reaching October glory (that’s S & N as in Slim & None).

When these two teams last met on Opening Day, the venue was Fenway Park, the date was April 4, 2010.

If you care, the Yankees have won 11 straight home Openers since 1986. Their last loss at home on Opening Day was in 1982, 7-6 to the White Sox.

The Newtown tragedy will be remembered today at The Stadium.
