One-hit wonderfuls

There were two brilliantly pitched games last night:

The Cardinals stellar rookie Shelby Miller gave up a leadoff single by Eric Young Jr. and then retired the next 27 in a row shutting out the Rockies, 3-0.

It was his first career complete game and he made it all the more delicious by whiffing Young to end the game for his 13th strikeout, tying a Cardinals rookie record. Miller threw 113 pitches, 84 for strikes.

But last night, May 10, became the first time (at least since 1900) in which two pitchers threw shutouts allowing one hit or less while walking no one on the same day.

Boston’s Jon Lester was perfect against Toronto for 5.2 innings before Maicer Izturis lined a double to left field over the third baseman to end all hope of perfection.

But Izturis ended up as the only Jay to reach base as the Red Sox topped Toronto, 5-0. Lester was in total command throwing 118 pitches, 79 for strikes while whiffing five.

There have been three complete game one-hitters this season
