Sign of the Apocalypse: Mo blows a save

Before the start of last night’s NY v NY “classic” the host Mets honored Mariano Rivera, at Citi Field, as every team has honored Mo in his last visit to their ballpark. Then, at the end of the game, they did something that no other team had done in Mo’s 19 years in major league baseball.

In a great match-up, Hiroki Kuroda and the Yankees led Matt Harvey and the Mets entering the 9th inning, 1-0, thanks to a Lyle Overbay RBI single.

Enter The Sandman.

Rivera allowed a bloop double to Daniel Murphy leading off the 9th, then a David Wright single that tied the game and gave Mo his first blown save of the season after 18 successes. Wright took second on Brett Gardner’s wild throw to the plate and then Lucas Duda hit a walkoff single to give the Mets a 2-1 win.

It was Rivera’s third career blown save against the Mets and the 74th of his career, but remarkably it was the first blown save of his career without retiring a batter. It took just nine pitches.

It was Rivera’s 700th save opportunity: 626 saves – 74 blown saves – 89%

Mariano only has six blown saves in which he retired just one batter
