ON STAN’S ANNIVERSARY, SANO, BROXTON, AND DAVIDSON HAVE 15 HAT TRICKS
JULY 28 1963: STAN THE MAN WHIFFS THREE TIMES FOR THE FIRST AND ONLY TIME IN HIS CAREER
On July 28, 1963 in the first game of a doubleheader at Wrigley Field, Cubs pitcher Dick Ellsworth struck out Stan Musial three times in Stan’s three at bats, the first time looking and the next two times swinging. Ellsworth pitched a complete game seven-hitter in the Cubs 5-1 win. Ellsworth struck out 10 Cardinals including Gary Kolb who took Musial’s place after Stan left the game after six innings. Musial sat out the second game also won by the Cubs, 16-11.
It would be the only time ‘Stan the Man’ whiffed three times in a game during his remarkable 22-year, 3026 game, career.
On August 12, less than two weeks after that game, the 42-year-old Musial announced he was retiring.
Here are 11 players who have struck out 3+ times in game at least 11 times this season:
