The Bill Chuck Files of June 30, 2019

Each Sunday, in remembrance of my friend Nick Cafardo, I post “the Bill Chuck Files” (named by Nick in his Sunday Baseball Notes column)

In their first 81 games of the 2017, 2018, and 2019 seasons, the Toronto Blue Jays hit 107 homers each year.

There have been no walkoff hit by pitches this season through Friday, but there have been four walkoff walks, two walkoff errors, and four walkoff sac flies.

In their first 700 games played, no player was hit by more pitches than Carlos Quentin who was plunked 118 times in his 448 plate appearances, the most in MLB history. Jason Kendall is next having gotten hit 110 times in 461 PA. In third place is Derek Dietrich, who was hit five times last weekend, and has been hit 108 times in his first 364 times to the plate.

All sports fans will miss the presence of Bob Ley on ESPN. He is smart, insightful, and precise, a model for broadcast journalists at every level.

Nomar Mazara leads the majors with 70 plate appearances in which he has had a 1-2 count. He’s gone 22-68 (.324) with one sac fly and one HBP. The Yankees’ Gary Sanchez has hit six homers on 1-2 counts.

Adweek reports that Major League Baseball has been working this season to help its players improve their social media outreach to fans. The article explains that “MLB is using content-management application Greenfly, co-founded by two-time All-Star Shawn Green, who spent 15 years as a player. The league has been working with Greenfly for three years.” Greenfly provides players with images, videos, and other media that they can download and share on social media platforms.

I don’t participate in All-Star voting, because I’m afraid of being called for jury duty.

This season, for every home run Rays infielder Brandon Lowe hits, he and his wife, Madison, will donate $100 to the Crisis Center of Tampa Bay. The Rays Baseball Foundation, the official charity of the Rays, will also contribute $100 per home run in support of Lowe’s “Home Runs for Hope” campaign. So far $3,000 have gone to the charity.

In their first 75 games in 2018, the Angels struck out 570 times. In their first 75 games in 2019, the Angels struck out 490 times., the only team below 500 whiffs in 75 games this season. The Texas Rangers struck out 741 times in 75 games.

The halfway mark in baseball is a constant 81 games, think of it like Christmas, which occurs on the same date every year. But “before the All-Star Game,” stats are meaningless. Because the starting date of a season varies and the date of the All-Star Game varies, think of it like Hanukkah.

Michael Brantley and Marcell Ozuna lead the majors each hitting into 10 inning-ending double plays.

The Yankees and Red Sox game Saturday was the first nine-inning game, not played in September/October, when each team used eight pitchers.
