The Bill Chuck Files of October 13, 2019

Each Sunday, in remembrance of my friend Nick Cafardo, I post “the Bill Chuck Files” (named by Nick in his Sunday Baseball Notes column)

Tim Anderson of the White Sox led the majors with six games of at least four hits. The St. Louis Cardinals totaled four hits in their first two games of the NLCS.

Which tells you more about the Dodgers plight the last three postseasons: Cody Bellinger hitting a combined .178 (24-145) with four homers and 13 RBI in 36 games or Clayton Kershaw‘s 4.28 ERA and 14 homers allowed in 69.1 IP in 14 postseason games?

On April 10 and 11 of last season, Shane Robinson played for the New York Yankees. Robinson was sent down to the minors and didn’t return until July wearing uniform #38 since his number #25 was taken by a Yankees rookie in the interim. Remember this little factoid, because someday many years from now, you might be asked, “Who was the last Yankee to wear number 25 before it was retired for Gleyber Torres?” And while everyone will be answering “Mark Teixeira,” you will know better.

Suddenly, the biggest offseason question for MLB has changed from what to do about helium-filled regular season baseballs to what to do if baseball has an opioid problem.

Trivia Question: Today is the anniversary of Bill Mazeroski‘s homer win the 1960 World Series for the Pirates over the Yankees in the 9th inning of Game Seven. Who was the Yankee left fielder who watched the ball fly over the Forbes Field ivy-covered wall?

There have already been two shutouts in the LCS in the first three games. There was one last LCS, two in 2017, and five in the 2016 LCS (!). The last Yankees shutout thrown in the LCS was October 18, 2017, when they blanked the Astros, 5-0. Houston went on to win the World Championship that season.

The Nationals and Dodgers were evenly matched in the NLDS and had been for quite a while:

Speaking of blankings, Anibal Sanchez held the Cardinals scoreless for 7.2 innings in Game One of the NLCS. The last time Sanchez held an opponent without a run for at least 7.2 IP was June 15, 2015, when he was with the Tigers threw a complete game nine-inning shutout of the Reds.

Speaking of Anibal Sanchez, he allowed 15 steals this regular season without anyone being caught stealing, thats the most in the majors.

In the 7th and 8th innings combined, in 2017 the Red Sox Sox had a 3.03 ERA; in 2018, a 3.93 ERA; and this season, a 4.31 ERA.

Any team that hires the toxic Curt Schilling better also hire a crisis-management PR firm at the same time.

Aaron Boone should write a book on bullpen management. Dave Roberts should read it.

Stephen Strasburg and Cole Hamels each walked 56 batters. Hamels pitched 141.2 innings and Strasburg tossed 209.0 innings.

Yankees reliever Tommy Kahnle pitched a total of 32.0 7th innings this season in 41 games. Kahnle faced 119 batters and allowed a total of 15 hits (including just two homers) in 110 at-bats, a .136 BAA.

Amongst teams that scored two runs or less in a game this season, the Angels were the only team to go winless, they were 0-41 overall.

Trivia answer – Yogi Berra was the Yankee left fielder. Take a look:
